Decoupage Dreams! Meet Nancy Neel.

Meet Nancy Neel – a budding artist living here in JVT.

She and a friend discovered a shared passion for arts and crafts and recently embarked on a home-based creative venture. They have an instagram page for their home business to share their creativity and artistic taste.

Prodded by her son, Nancy also started a YouTube channel to document the items she creates. Watch some of her videos to see exactly how she creates her pieces! You can see the application of decoupage on a ceramic plate or glass vase. Be inspired by how she has recycled an old lantern or decorated a candle with decoupage to make your own creations.

Nancy says she is motivated by her friends and family. “They encourage me on this path to create my own style which is influenced by my passion of art and crafts,” Nancy tells me. “I fell in love with applying decoupage on all types of surfaces, especially on ceramics.”

She explained to me that, at some point, she decided “to stop being only a consumer and start to be a productive person” as well. Our world would indeed be a better place with a little less consumerism and a lot more re-use or upcyling of products and materials to give them a second life.

If you’re interested in her work, get in touch by email (nneel@qti.qualcomm.com) or give her a ring on 050-1008836 !

Think Pink and support Dubai-based Brest Friends this month

October is breast cancer awareness month. You surely know this. pink_ribbon_gs

I am circulating this post on the JVT Community website as a shout out to all the cancer survivors living in our neighborhood. There are a few, including me.

If you haven’t thought about Pink October, here are a few things you can do:

If you’re a lady, keep up with your self-exam and if you spot any lump – see a doctor, don’t wait! Many hospitals and clinics are offering free mammogram this month. It’s the time to start if you are over 45.

Ladies and gents find one event this October to join. Things will be happening all around Dubai to celebrate survivors and raise awareness on the importance of early prevention. Participate – it shows you care!

One suggestion: Join the Dubai Creek Striders for the 5k or 10k Pink Run on Friday 20th October at 6am from the World Trade Center.  Click for details and sign up.

Contribute to the cause
brestfriendslogoWhy not also give a little? Any contribution – big or small – to Brest Friends will help more women get the care they need in the UAE. The local support group is working to help diagnosed women get through this terrible ordeal with dignity, understanding and the strength to fight. Set up in 2005 by Dr Houriya Kazim, the UAE’s first female surgeon, with the mission to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer, Brest Friends is under the auspices of the Al Jalila Foundation and can legally accept public donations 🙂 Click here to give now!

Thanks for taking the time to read this post. Give your own shout out this month to all the courageous women and men you know who have or are fighting cancer. Take a moment to call or write them. They’ll appreciate your support!

New Kids in Town

More and more is happening in JVT since the summer. Firstly, we’ve noticed alot more children walking to school in the neighborhood. Arcadia has tripled their enrollment which is exciting news. We’d like to welcome the many new residents in the Village to our vibrant community. With the start of this school year, we’ve also seen an increase in the number of kids activities on offer @sunmarke. No more excuses for inactive children spending hours on a gameboy with such a great after-school offering within walking distance from home!

Chess class is also of offer with Headway this year.

Are you looking for football classes? It might be a tough choice to choose between AC Milan or FC Barcelona after-school classes, but at least you can feel spoiled for choice with this large offer on daily and the weekends

If martial arts is your thing, look no further than JVT! We are glad to have back the experts at Budo Juku with Judo and Taekwondo classes and Gulf Star Sports offering Karate classes to round out a great array of physical activities here in the neighborhood. New shops and services in JVT

One thing I love about Dubai is that there is always something new. Leave for a few weeks business trip or a few months holiday over the summer and you come back to discover new roads, new restaurants or new shops.

Last month saw several new openings in JVT I am happy to report.

We now have something for the guys with a gents salon, just next door to my favorite eatery Noa’s Délice

We also have not one, but two laundry services on opposite sides of The Imperial Residence. Let us know your favorite!

Don’t forget about all the other great services available right here in JVT for hair, nails or a nice lunchtime meal!

For a listing of all the JVT shops, bookmark this page!

Let us know if you hear about any new shops coming to the village.

Your friendly neighbor blog team 🙂

After school classes in JVT. Let’s get moving!

It’s that time again – summer vacation is over and we are dressing children in their school uniforms. The regular routine is starting again. I expect many parents are thinking about how to keep their kids busy after school and expose them to new ideas and build new skills. Rest assured, once again there are a great number of fun activities to try right here in JVT thanks to an excellent line up at Sunmarke school. Kudos to Elaine Baille for her great line up of after school activities!

I am happy to share my favorites below for which you can find all the details on the JVT community website by clicking here! There are many more activities as well that are hosted by residents. You can find these by browsing the same Activities page.

Energy expending classes top my list as youngsters really need to get out some pent up energy before bed!  Why not try the new soccer classes on offer by FCBEscola or the AC Milan Academy. Not only will your kids learn the skill of the game, they also gain many great life skills by participating in an organized team sport.

For individual sports, Judo and Taekwondo are amazing ways to get fit, increase flexibility and build mental strength as well. Get in touch with our great friends at Budo Juku who are running classes again this year at Sunmarke.

Shotokan Karate is also on offer right here in JVT with expert Sensei and former UK champion, Alex Gardner. Karate is another great means of self-defense and teaches respect, builds self-esteem and fosters confidence. Here is a short article on the difference between the three disciplines. Visit the Gulf Star website for more info.

If dancing is your thing, you are in luck! The Shiamak Dance Workshop is now starting in JVT on Tuesdays – Thursday for children, juniors and adults. Their classes are a great means of self expression and a fun way to expend a lot of energy. You might find me at their Bollywood dance class! Check out their website to know more.

And there’s more to come. Swim classes, chess club and language classes in French, Spanish and Russian from qualifed teachers are all available right here in JVT. Details will be posted on the JVT website in the coming days. You can also get take many different home exercise classes on offer by some local residents. Check out the listing to view all the options.

PS – If you’ve got a home or group activity going that is not listed, get in touch! We are happy to mention any activities hosted by residents for free. Let’s get moving JVT!

Keep your Home Safe this Summer

Nakheel has recently shared an important message about Home Safety over the holidays. The JVT Residents blog is happy to forward this information which you may wish to consult.

Dubai Police run a Home Safety Programme, a security scheme designed to protect homes during long periods of absence, such as summer holidays.

Click here to access a PDF on the scheme guidelines and information which includes an application form to sign up. For further information or additional enquiries on the Home Safety Programme, please visit www.dubaipolice.gov.ae

We’d also like to recommend that neighbors look out for each other over the summer period and report any suspicious activity around the neighborhood to the JVT security (Tel: 04 390 3333 or 04 375 9944).

Happy Holidays !
