Recycling arrives in JVT

It seems we have another reason to thank Nakheel these days.

Two recylcing areas have been set up in JVT. One is located at District 2, Gate 3 (Jumeirah Park exit).

20170120_181815

The other can be found in District 9 on Tulip street on the edge of Park 4.

Unfortunately, there is no section for glass. It’s also somewhat surprising there is no bin inside the units so one can wonder how the waste management company will be collecting the recycled items. Anyhow, this is a wonderful start!

And, after many years of driving to Springs to dispose of my daily newspaper, aluminum cans and empty wine bottles, I’m not complaining!!

So neighbors, here’s to practicing good habits with the 5Rs (or 6 as I prefer) for sustainable living, in this order:

Refuse The most simple tactic, say no. Don’t buy or accept things you don’t need!

Reduce  Yes, indeed, this means consume less too!

Reuse  Take reusable bags to the store. Skip the disposal stuff and buy reusable items instead.

Repurpose Can you gift this item instead of trashing it? Would someone else be happy with your second-hand clothes?  Can you make it into something new?

Recycle Use the Nakheel bins for this 🙂

and finally, another way to save the planet is to recycle organic waste by composting. So, go ahead and

Rot! Have you read my article on the Bokashi? It’s perfect for turning our poor sand into fertile soil.

Start today!

You’ll note that recycling efforts, while important, are topped by other critical efforts we all should make.

Comment below about what you are doing to give our planet a fighting chance.

Cycle Track coming to JVT

Great news! We’ve learned that Nakheel is planning a new 13km cycle track in JVT. This will link up to the city-wide cycling circuit. We already see many people cycling to school in the village. It will be fantastic to be able to enjoy the outdoors even more.

JVT-Cycle-Track

Nakheel is creating safe, scenic bike routes to encourage recreational cycling and promote health and wellbeing among families and individuals of all ages as part of its commitment to enhancing developments with new facilities and services. Dedicated paths are needed to allow new and experienced cyclists to ride safely, without having to use main roads. The cycle track network will make cycling more accessible and inspire people to get pedalling to keep fit, socialise and help the environment.  For example, people will be able to cycle to the shops, school and friends’ houses without using the car.

The plan also includes a 10 km ‘super loop’, for more experienced riders which can be seen on the below map.

Secondary school student brings speedcubing rage to JVT

Francisco Hamlin, a Year 12 student at Sunmarke school, was the brains behind the recent Emirates Open Speedcubing competition hosted by the World Cube Association. Not only did he instigate and organize the day long event, he was an avid competitor himself.

Our local restaurants, Noa’s Delices and Forni, were on hand to keep everyone’s thirst quenched and bellies full as they went through both lunch and dinner in the school gymnasium. The winners out of 102 registered participants were crowned late in the day on Saturday, 14th January.

The winners of the each category were:

  • 3x3x3: Fransisco Hamlin (Sunmarke School) Best Overall score – 9.4 secs
  • 2x2x2: Fransisco Hamlin (Sunmarke School) Best Overall Score – 2.26
  • 4x4x4: Fransisco Hamlin (Sunmarke School) Best Overall Score – 8.79
  • 5x5x5: Fransisco Hamlin (Sunmarke School) Best Overall Score – 8.79
  • 3x3x3 One-handed: Fransisco Hamlin (Sunmarke School) Best Overall Score – 13.15
  • 3x3x3 Blind-folded:Mayur Ukey Best (Dubai based School) Overall Score – 02.32.2

The action-packed day was concluded with an awards ceremony where all participants received an official certificate from the Emirates Open 2017 sponsors.

Have a look at some pictures I took on the day:

Check out all the amazing videos on the Sunmarke school’s Facebook page. Here is one that demonstrates all the skill and dexterity needed to become a master at speedcubing.

A new treat in JVT: Noa’s Delices

A young couple living in JVT is soon bringing us a new culinary treat, Noa’s Delices!

Their business, Earnest Enterprises LLC, is behind this new venture. And earnest they are. This hardworking pair brings the neighborhood another family business which is sure to tantalize our taste buds. Part of the JVT community since a little more than one year, we are delighted that Stephane and Sunita chose to open their lovely little café restaurant right at home.

I was lucky to recently meet the co-owner, Stephane, as he was sitting silently at an empty table in the quiet restaurant striving to get everything in place for the opening. I took the opportunity to pop in and then got to speak to the couple about how they got started. They began planning this project back in May, 2015 and feel it has been a marathon run ever since. With many hurdles, big and small, to overcome, they are rightly proud to have come nearly to the end of their race. “The experience has been priceless and worth any hardship we encountered along the way,” Stephane told me. I’m particularly excited to give the JVT community a sneak peak at what we can expect to find at our newest dining experience opening soon.

Noa’s Délices is aptly named after the couple’s first miracle, daughter Noa. Their little princess inspired them to develop this food and drink outlet incorporating all of the Delights of a genuine, home-feel french café with traditional viennoiserie, patisserie and time-honored dishes. As ultimate foodies, they are clearly driven to develop an authentic dine-in concept offering traditional meals at an affordable price to delight their customers and build a loyal base of regulars. “We believe in being honest and bringing honest food to a table,” said Sunita.

I was especially thrilled to learn that JVTers will get a special treat with at-home delivery of Noa’s French Breakfast Basket. Brought directly to your doorstep, the basket will include real French pastries, breads, jams and butter.  I hope to be the first to put in my order for a fresh, daily ficelle! Anyone who has travelled to Paris will certainly agree with me that an early morning thin ficelle spread with delicious dairy butter cannot be beat.

Passionate about their craft, the couple explained how they were often disappointed with a lot of French food outlets around Dubai which turned out to be either less than authentic or highly overpriced. They also found that JVT was lacking an establishment where families, office employees or neighborhood school staff could congregate to enjoy a good meal or light snack without having to take the car outside the community. These two points were central to convincing the couple to open their doors at the Imperial Residence Building next to Limitless. When I asked them why they chose JVT as their home, it was the variety of cultures and, above all, the tranquility which makes for peaceful and relaxing surroundings which won them over.

I found their enthusiasm for Noa’s Delices both charming and infectious. It surely made me want all the best for them. Not only do Sunita and Stephane intend to make us happy in JVT, they also plan to give back. They explained to me how they wish to contribute to humanitarian work from future profits they generate. “We are so passionate about our business because we believe in being real and in doing good,” Sunita explained. Since getting married in 2012, they have been working on setting up a business and dreaming about making their mark on the world. Let’s wish them lots of luck and help them achieve their dreams each time we dine at Noa’s Delights!

Opening any day now… See you there!

Need sparkling clean windows? Meet Suzanne from JVT and her dream Gleam Team!

I’m especially happy to write about this particular JVT neighbor just before the year end. As many homes are getting decorated and all spruced up for some sparkling New Year celebrations at home, it would be a shame to forget to give those high up windows and balconies a glisten.

We surely have a lot of multi-talented and enterprising residents in JVT and I recently met yet another – Suzanne Kalloghlian. She is not only a children’s author, a teaching assistant and a personal tutor, but a budding entrepreneur to boot!  She has found a perfect niche in the market when she started her own business a few years back called The Gleam Team. Her team of seven will make your windows sparkle, trust me, I’ve tried. They specialize in window cleaning both inside and out. While they are outside, you can also have them power wash your patios, balconies and garage doors. Specialized in windows, they can change the netting on your sliding door fly-screens as well. Window cleaning is such a drag that I think it’s marvelous to have a great little crew you can call in for a super reasonable price to do one of those perennial dreadful chores.

Suzanne’s straightforward and simple idea took some work to set up. But, after getting the paperwork sorted, the business has taken off thanks to happy client recommendations. I can understand why as Suzanne explained to me her guiding mantra – ‘the customer is always right’ she asserts. “If a customer is not happy, which thank goodness is very rare, it bothers me immensely and I always attempt to rectify the problem if I can,” she told me.  Clearly, this strategy is working well for The Gleam Team.

Suzanne and her Gleam Team !

Suzanne and her Gleam Team !

I also think her success boils down to the personal touch. We called in The Gleam Team to fix our ripped and broken fly screens. Unfortunately, the company which had installed them did a terrible job and it was impossible to snap out the frames, as would be customary. I never noticed this issue until we needed the repairs. At first, the team informed me that they would be unable to accept the job for fear of damaging the aluminum frames. But the very next day, Suzanne’s husband came around to check on the difficulties his team had encountered and identified the right solution to remove and repair the screens.

The Gleam Team is truly a family affair. Husband George does the bookings (as Suzanne holds down a full time school job). His professional work is done remotely from home, so it’s easier for him to handle the administrative side of things Suzanne tells me with a twinkle in her eye! Their two sons, Raffi and Zak sort out all the necessary day-to-day running of GLEAM making a big contribution to the business. Suzanne is also quite adamant about taking good care of her staff. She especially raved about Raby & Jason, her main window cleaners, and one of whom you would surely find on every job. “We work as a real team,” Suzanne explained.

Another thing that Suzanne really takes to heart is caring for the planet. They use environmentally friendly products with no chemicals that are safe to both children and animals. Their procedures also account for our desert climate to ensure the minimal water usage. They take special care to avoid water leakage in through the window frames which can happen very easily in some of the construction here and cause lots of damage. The team also wears shoe covers and gloves inside your home to protect carpets and furnishings.

Ho, Ho, Ho!   No, it’s not Santa, it’s The Gleam Team!

When I asked Suzanne why she started this business, it came down to simple supply and demand. She had tried to find a company some years ago to come and clean the windows at her home and found the costs extortionate and the service poor.  She felt she could offer a quality and friendly service. “I wanted some polite, hygienic, well trained guys that would come and do the job efficiently and quickly, with a smile,” Suzanne remarked. “Since I couldn’t find that kind of service I decided to start my own.”

Suzanne is a curious woman at heart and has been involved in a number of small business ventures throughout her life from owning a bouncy castle company to setting up a costume jewelry distribution business. She is one to always stay busy and has explored many professions along the way. She’s trained in a number of different specialties from medical secretary to interior designer. Suzanne followed her husband to this region 16 years ago. They never had the intention to make this their home, but like many, they’ve established roots here. Her son now lives in JVT with his young family and this is what brought Suzanne and her husband to our neighborhood in the summer of 2016. “It’s a friendly place to live,” she commented. “Now that the weather is cooler, I will be donning my trainers and setting out for a few walks with the dogs and my new grandson to explore the area more fully.” You’ll surely happen upon Suzanne if you also like to walk about. If you do, I encourage you to start a conversation and you’ll certainly be enthralled with her vivacious attitude towards life!

In case a few neighbors want to call in the Gleam Team to spruce up their homes for the New Year, ask about their special offer for group bookings of 4 or 5 homes on the same day! Regardless, Suzanne always gives her neighbors a special deal and quotes JVT residents at 10% less then the going rate. I can highly recommend the service; very professional, very courteous and very clean.

I loved Arcadia’s spring carnival in the park and surely this will be another great morning of fun!

By the way, today is the International Day of Tolerance. What better way to mark the day than putting this community event on your weekend calendar.  The best way to promote tolerance is getting to know others, learning about different cultures and embracing the fact that we are not all the same.

Meet Gladys – your JVT beauty maven!

Gladys is for real; she does exist. And a very kind lady she is. If you haven’t yet experienced the latest in the JVT cosmetics scene, it’s time to meet Gladys!

I had the good fortune to meet her when I popped into Gladys Beauty Saloon last week. I stopped by, unannounced, and treated myself to a manicure and pedicure.  I can honestly say that I was not disappointed! As they didn’t know who I was, I observed and enjoyed the treatment. I was well taken care of by the lovely ladies who told me a bit more about the Saloon and its beginnings.

Then I noticed Gladys. She was testing the latest paraffin wax treatment herself. It seems that Gladys wants to be sure her clients are getting the best so on this day she was trying out a new product she plans to offer. With twenty five years of work experience, Gladys understands quality. She is keen to offer the best services and especially wishes to make you feel right at home. Warm and welcoming, Gladys didn’t hesitate to pull open the front door to greet new arrivals. As she told me, “I just love the job of serving our clients.”

img-20161108-wa0018

After my treatment, I introduced myself and got the scoop on Gladys.  Having spent her formative years in the beauty business, a combination of factors led Gladys to open her own shop fifteen years ago with her first beauty parlour in Karama. The JVT addition is the fifth saloon she has opened, on 20th October, with others in Motor City, Dubai Marina and Al Barsha proudly flanking her original premises. She told me some stories of the early days, counting out her earnings with just enough to pay her team. Today, she leads her beauty empire with 60 ladies in a hands-on manner and with a great passion for her field.

img-20161108-wa0021

It’s wonderful to now count a full-service saloon inside JVT. While I only had time for a mani/pedi, there are all the options one would expect from full body massage treatments, eyebrow threading, leg waxing, hair cutting, coloring and styling. Do away with your tension and worries while Gladys girls take care of your hair, skin or nails! I, for sure, will be heading back for myself and with my girls for their next hair cuts.

Sorry for the guys, but this place is not for you. However, I recommend you stop in nevertheless and reserve a treatment for your lovely wife or girlfriend. It’s a great idea for a birthday gift, a delightful way to mark any holiday or why not, just to say ‘thank you’ to a special woman in your life.

Find the contact details and booking number on the JVT shops page.

‘Witch’ houses to hit for Halloween 2016?

Thanks to all the community for responding to my request about Halloween. We’ve been able to compile a nice listing so all the kids will know where to knock for ‘trick-or-treat’.

Be sure to leave your lights on and maybe hang a decoration or two. If you’d prefer not to be visited by any witches or goblins, it would surely be wise to post a note on your front door.
