Gulf News reports about residents’ petition to Nakheel

If you haven’t heard about the petition spearheaded by a dynamic JVT resident that urges Nakheel to finally complete works in the community, read the recent Gulf News article below.

Indeed, many of the main complaints are about issues that have been festering for years now. Four years after delivery, residents still wait for simple road signs whose absence creates ridiculous challenges for taxis to find us, dinner deliveries to arrive and has even surely caused more than one friend to say ‘I’ll never come visit you again!’. The gated community that Nakheel promised owners has also never materialized causing a reported fear among residents of a rise in petty crime. While we nevertheless live a very safe life here in Dubai, it would certainly be greatly appreciated by all residents that Nakheel move into high gear for completing JVT !

At least, there has been a marked improvement in the work of the landscaping crew. Let’s hope for many more improvements very soon thanks to the petitioners !

Hundreds of Jumeirah Village Triangle (JVT) residents on Wednesday petitioned their developer, Nakheel, who, they claim, has “abandoned” them and left the community unsafe with many unfinished construction projects that are “accidents waiting to happen”. Read more…

Security & Safety in JVT

It’s been some time since I’ve been able to post to the community. Have you all missed me?

I imagine that alot of you can understand how one get’s submerged with work or family duties. With the onset of summer I am eagerly awaiting what I feel is a well-deserved break from the routine! As Ramadam begins and the summer heat sets in, it’s time for us all to let up on the gas pedal, even if slightly, enjoy time with family and some days off. Before then, I want to get these recent community reports I’ve received out to all my followers in JVT.

The most recent news I’ve had about security and safety in JVT concerns the theft of motorcyles. It’s important we all stay vigilant and together we can ensure our community stays safe.

On June 9th, a fellow resident wrote to inform me that he had learned a motorcycle was stolen in JVT District 4, in the daytime. He had a direct experience a week before when a thief attempted to steal his bike and he awoke to find a broken lock. That same night, an attempt was also made to relieve his neighbor of his motorcycle that was chained up in his car port in District 9. Police and security were called but certainly a watchful community can also do alot to curb stealing. He’s also learned about the case of a stolen motorcylce in the Springs. This sounds like a repeat offender is about and we should all concern ourselves with theft to prevent such offences.

This concerned resident tells me that in the last year a few other items were taken from his yard including a garden hose and even a pair of old flip flops !

About two months ago, I had another message from a female resident. She’s a regular runner in JVT, for about three years now, in the early evenings or early on weekend mornings. She had started noticimg a suspicious white Nisssan Sunny that seemed to be following her about on a regular basis. The incidents were reported to security and she noted an increase of police presence after that. If others have noticed similiar concerns about their safety, make sure this is reported and unwanted visitors are kept out of our neighborhood.

Stay aware, be sure to question any suspicious characters lurking about and call the police to report anything out of the ordinary.

Another supermarket in JVT

UPDATED: 1 Nov 2015

They now deliver! Call: 052 639 0595

As reported to me by a fellow resident, Siva, another new supermarket has opened one week ago in JVT. I went down to have a look. Posting some photos below for those who haven’t paid them a visit yet. Clearly, not nearly as posh as Milestone. I found the prices a little high. Although I haven’t compared, they seem to rival on the price point with Milestone without the gourmet, luxury cachet. I’m nevertheless delighted to have another option just down the street.  It will be interesting to see how they do.

Pesky insects bothering you?

If you’re having issues with flying insects, you’ll be glad to see this news below from Nakheel. Funny that they finally remark the poor landscaping. Let’s hope the poor blokes are taught how to garden or that Nakheel hires a new landscaping firm ! They don’t even seem to know that you must pull weeds out by the root lest they just continue to return and return and return…. Incredible, update to this story. As soon as I posted, I have noted another email from Nakheel announcing that a new maintenance and landscaping company has been appointed: Opal Landscaping. Can’t wait to see the improvements as of the 1st of June !

Notification to residents from Nakheel:

This is in regards to the complaints received from residents regarding flying insects in the Community. Please note that we have inspected different locations and confirmed that due to the poor trimming and maintaining the plantation around the Community, flying insects increased in big numbers.

We have instructed the Pest Control Service Provider to add treatment and control measures for this type of insects. Furthermore, we have instructed the current Landscaping Maintenance Service Provider to do the needful immediately. We are following up on that.

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and disturbance caused.

Should you wish to discuss the matter further, kindly contact the Nakheel Call Center on 04 390 3333 orJVT.Community@nakheel.com.

Please note this blog is run by a concerned resident to keep the community informed. We are not Nakheel!

The Driver – car chauffeur service

I am delighted to tell you about another JVT resident with his own business. Hasan Lazem started his company, The Driver, two years ago. He tells me he has been in Dubai now almost 8 years and moved to JVT just last summer. Our neighborhood is attracting a lot of self-starting entrepreneurs for sure !

Having been in the transport business for some time before starting The Driver, Hasan knew he could solve a common problem for many people by offering an alternative to waiting for a taxi after a night out. Even for those who don’t overdo it, Dubai’s zero tolerance policy means you should really leave your car at home! But when you’re already out with friends and decide to have that glass of wine, you can now simply call ‘The Driver’. Hasan says, “Many people prefer to drive to the bar, hotel or party they are going to, but do not take the risk of driving home after having a few drinks, which is where we come in. Along with the great initiate being put forward by the Dubai Police to combat driving whilst under the influence, The Driver offers the public a unique chauffeur service by driving you home in your own car.” As expats, we are all visitors here in the U.A.E. Hasan notes that “we have been invited to work and we have to abide by the rules and regulations of the country. The consequences of breaking the law can be very serious not to forget the danger to the public of driving whilst under the influence.”

The Driver offers the top service that we all get rather accustomed to in Dubai. The Driver caters for the unique needs of each of its customers. They drive customers home in their own vehicles after a night out (called the ‘night service’), however, they also provide other services such as valet parking for parties, events and hotels. The Driver can provides drivers on yearly contracts to corporate clients or individuals as well. Hasan can most likely respond to any driving service request they get!

His message to the public is to keep the UAE roads safe by driving responsibly. If not using The Driver, there are plenty of taxis that can drive you home safely. Don’t risk your safety or the lives of others. Try The Driver! My advice is to put their number in your speed dial if you don’t already have it on your phone.

Being a dog lover like so many residents here, Hasan says he enjoys living in JVT for the feeling of being so close to everything yet away from the hustle & bustle of the city. He’s especially glad to have a garden for his dog to play. If you meet him on a stroll in our long central park, be sure to ask about his favorite story when one of his drivers was surprised by the patron he was driving home in his Porsche. The ride of his life for sure!

2014 JVT Open Championship – Wrap up on the Winners

Did you know that JVT has 5 wonderful tennis courts spread across the different districts? You may have seen them, but something you could have missed was that a few weeks ago, these courts were put to good use for an Open tournament. Residents, but also people living outside JVT, were able to compete for the title of 2014 JVT Open Champion. I caught up with the organizer to find out more about this amazing event which took place earlier this month. Here is what they told me:

“After making the necessary arrangements with Active Sports (the company managing the court booking system and providing coaching), Nakheel, the Ministry of Sports and Tennis Emirates (the governing body for tennis in the UAE), we started inviting a few players we know in the country. In only a few days, we received 63 applications for players eager to test their skills on the court!” said John van Zuylen, organizer of the event.

Two categories were organized (men and ladies) at each of 2 skills levels. The tournament was spread over 2 weeks and took place on courts #3 and #4 which are located in what I call ‘JVT Central Park’. The interest for the tournament reached much further than the organizers had anticipated.

Among the players were Sanjana Sudhir (UAE #1, and Junior #366 in the world), Luciana Rabines (UAE #2, and Junior #610 in the world), Amr Hazem (Senior #69 in the world), Adel Ghazzawi (former Davis Cup player for KSA), Oleg Geraskin (former Ukraine National Champion) and Haseeb Aslam (former #1 and Davis Cup player for Pakistan) to cite a few. The 2 weeks finished with the big finals on Saturday March 8.

In the Men’s Main Draw, Amr Hazem (the favorite) took the upperhand 6/2 6/4 on promising 14-year old Dhruv Bahl, who had cruised through the tournament with ease and class.

In the Ladies Main Draw, rankings were respected as well with Sanjana Sudhir beating Luciana Rabines 6/3 6/7 7/6 in an historic 4h25match!

During the 2 weeks, more and more curious JVT residents dropped by and stayed to watch some matches. On the day of the finals, there were around 40 spectators supporting the finalists, and that definitely made this “tennis party” even better.

The organizers would like to say a big thank you to all residents who came to watch some games. They also thank everyone for their patience and flexibility with the court bookings: courts were sometimes hard to get during these weeks and everyone understood it was for a good cause.

The JVT Community Blog will certainly be informed when the next event gets scheduled and we’ll be sure to let everyone know.

Looking forward to the 2015 edition which we hope will be an even bigger success, with more JVT-based players and hopefully winners!

Supermarket to Open in JVT

If you haven’t heard, the long-awaited supermarket will open this weekend in JVT.

Milestone Café and Food Market will officially open for business at 11am on Saturday, 15 March 2014.

Located at the Limitless Al Khail Plaza building, the new shopping and café is spread over two floors and has onsite parking. There’s also long been an ATM in the office building lobby so you have access to cash when needed right in the village.

Milestone focuses on organic, specialist produce, and includes a delicatessen, fresh fruit and vegetable counter, fish counter, bakery, butchery, plus a wide range of everyday household essentials.  Milestone also stocks a range of health and wellbeing-related items, including foods for gluten-free and sugar-free diets, while the first-floor café serves a wide selection of drinks and snacks. Looking forward to trying it out !

I’ve been keeping my eye on progress. Less than two weeks ago they began stocking the shelves:

About a month ago, they were finalizing the fit-out of the shop: 20140216_073531

Milestone’s opening hours are 8am until 10pm daily. Deliveries within Jumeirah Village Triangle as well as an online ordering service and customer loyalty scheme are planned for the future.

And now we can look forward to another supermarket in the village. In the Damac building on Tulip street. Stay tuned…
